High School with a Higher Purpose
The Chesterton Academy of St. Joseph is a joyfully Catholic, classical high school in Fairborn, OH. Inspired by the beauty and richness of the Catholic faith, Chesterton Academy seeks to form young men and women to be joyful saints. By introducing them to great thinkers such as Socrates, Thomas Aquinas and Dante, and by forming them in a distinctly Catholic culture, we lead students to choose for themselves the adventure of being a disciple of Christ.
What is a Newsweater?
You may have noticed in years past that our Newsletter is titled, "Newsweater." Surprisingly not a typo, but a classic literary pun. See below for an explanation from Nathaniel Beckman, our Headmaster:
"I was asked recently to explain the title of this publication. Although one typically would avoid explaining a pun, I will make an exception. It is worth noting that Chesterton famously defends the pun in many of his works, even calling it “a perfect type of literary art.” If you doubt Chesterton enjoyed the pun simply open up any of his books, turn the pages, and you will find a pun under every leaf. So what does a newsletter have to do with a New Sweater? They both send a message....
Ironically, St. Thomas was nicknamed the "Dumb Ox" by fellow students because of his large physical stature, his shyness, and his silence. His quietness even caused many students to think that he was not very smart at all.
We have just completed Dante’s Inferno and have started our ascent into Mount Purgatory…
